Founded in 1945, the UN now numbers 191 member states, describing itself as a "global association of governments facilitating cooperation in international law, security, economic development, and social equity." The UN has struggled to maintain its original vision of preventing conflicts between nations; the East-West tension of the Cold War era limited the effectiveness of the UN’s Security Council in its earlier days, and more recent military conflict has seen the UN becoming increasingly vacillating and sidelined. Another key aim of the UN is the promotion of Human Rights. The track record, however, of several UN member nations concerning human rights, including Sudan, Cuba, Libya and the PRC, is abysmal.

The oil-for-food programme, ostensibly designed to help the Iraqi government provide for the needs of its ordinary citizens in the wake of the first Gulf War while preventing military buildup, engulfed the UN in controversy amidst allegations of corruption and cover-ups. However, an issue that receives less media attention but should be of much greater concern to Christians is the UN’s support for radical initiatives in the areas of what is euphemistically referred to as "reproductive health" and "family planning". The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) states categorically on its web site that "abortion should not be promoted as a method of family planning" and that it "does not provide support for abortion services". However, its underwriting of China’s "one child" policy, which features compulsory abortion, sterilization and female infanticide, along with the International Planned Parenthood Federation, gives the lie to such reassurances. The UNFPA and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) are committed to sex education for adolescents. UNICEF and the World Health Organisation (WHO) are jointly committed to an expanding role in "population dynamics", which in practice means the provision of abortifacients and sterilisation equipment.

The United Nations Committee of the Convention on the Rights of the Child provided another illustration of the UN’s willingness to meddle in the affairs of nation states. In 1995, it issued its report on the compliance of the UK against the provisions of the earlier convention. Its recommendations included the legislating away of the right of parents to discipline their children in the home and in private schools, alongside a process of ‘re-education’ to change public opinion. These recommendations gave anti-smacking campaigners in the UK a useful tool for putting pressure on the Government.

The existence of the God-denying UN flies in the face of Scriptural principles which set forth the nation state as God’s own institution. Christians should be praying against the spirit of Babel which drives it, and for the 'kings of the earth' to repent.
